HISTORY OF THE PIONEER MILL. During the War of 1812, General James Hedges spent some time at Fort Ball, one of the string of forts built along the Sandusky River. Impressed with the area, he convinced his brother Josiah Hedges, to visit. Josiah was also impressed; enough so that he purchased a large acreage across the river from the fort.
The restored Pioneer Village, with its massive water-powered grist mill, and representation of pioneer tradecrafts and occupations, offers a unique chance to step back in time. There are 20 historic buildings to explore. The centerpiece is a 3-story limestone gristmill, built in 1817, that still grinds cornmeal today.

Roblin's Mill was built in 1842 by Owen Roblin, the grandson of a United Empire Loyalist. When purchased by the Metro Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, the mill was scheduled for demolition. The original timbers, flooring and machinery were salvaged and moved to Black Creek Pioneer Village in 1964.
