KNO3 was another matter. 4 hours hardly touched it. So I switched to US nickels. In 8 hours the KNO3 was very fine but the nickels had compacted KNO3 on the face and back of the coins so thick that the coins looked like little footballs in profile. What a mess! I then re milled the coins with marbles and salvaged most of the KNO3.

The moisture level that causes clumping when ball milling is so low that it cannot be detected as "moist" or wet to the touch, but is enough to cause issues.

You can dissolve them and take off the sulfur or grind them but use and extra 10% to make up for the binder. I will grind the charcoal with the sulfur separately if I am particualrly unsure of my surroundings for ball milling and just screen them ...

I have been trying to get my ball mill working but so far all I get is caked balls and pellets. I start with a blade grinder, just KNO3 and a 100 mesh screen. Ball mill is 6" diameter (150x150mm), half full of .690 (17.5mm) musket balls. I tried a drying box over a 60W bulb. No useful effect, more pellets after 4 hours tumble.

I suppose ball mill will work. Most folks use this stuff in "candy" form (which brings a host of other issues). Then only the granularity of the KNO3 matters as the sugar is melted.
