The Kohler engine models MV18 or MV20 vertical shaft can be easily converted into models M18 or M20 horizontal shaft. To make this happen, the oil pickup hole on the oil pump side of the MV18 or MV20 crankcase will need to be tapped for threads and plugged with an Allen pipe plug or a short bolt with sealant.

As Richard stated above, vertical shaft engines are much more plentiful and far less expensive then horizontals. In my area you can get a modern vertical shaft tractor for anywhere between free and $100 without a mowing deck. You can't even begin to think about touching a Wheelhorse for less than $200 to $400 and they go way up from there.

Some manuafacturers (Hustler, etc.) only use vertical shaft engines to eliminate the mule drive. I had a 27hp LC Kawasaki SuperZ years ago with the horizontal shaft. That's when they used a gearbox which was pretty much a disaster. Come to think of it, that's the only ztr I've ever owned with a horizintal shaft engine.
